The Film
The 198-minute running time scared me. But this beautiful, loving documentary held my attention for its entire length. Mastroianni is fleshed out as a real human being, not the prototype “Latin Lover,” which annoyed him for so many years.
In addition to the six Fellini films he acted in:
- La Dolce Vita (1960)
- 8½ (1963)
- Roma (1972)
- City of Women (1980)
- Ginger and Fred (1986)
- Intervista (1987)
Tatò includes clips from many of the other 141 films he made (“many bad,” MM admits), or admired:
- FREELAND: Flying Down to Rio (1933)
- MONICELLI: Padri e Figli i Compagni (1957)
- GOLDFARB: Fellini — a Director’s Notebook (1969)
- MICHALKOV: Oci Ciornie (1987)
- BEMBERG: De Eso No Se Habla (1993)
- GERMI: Divorzio all’Italiana (1961)
- PETRI: Todo Modo Le Mani Sporche (1978-)
- MAGNI: Scipione Detto Anche l’Africano (1971)
- SCOLA: Una Giornata Particolare (1977)
- SCOLA: Dramma Della Gelosia (Tutti i Particolari in Cronaca) (1970)
- DE SICA: Amanti (1968)
- DE SICA: Ieri, Oggi, Domani (1963)
- DE SICA: Matrimonio all’Italiana (1964)
- SAKS: Cin Cin (1991)
- SCOLA: La Nuit de Varennes (1982)
- FERRERI: Touchez Pas La Femme Blanche (1974)
- BELLOCCHIO: Enrico IV (1984)
- PETRI: La Decima Vittima (1965)
- FAENZA: Sostiene Pereira (1995)
- MONICELLI: Casanova 70 (1965)
- CORBUCCI: Giallo Napoletano (1979)
- FARALDO: Tragico Ritorno (1952)
- MOFFA: La Principessa Delle Canarie (1954)
- FERRERI: Ciao Maschio (1978)
- VISCONTI: Le Notti Blanche (1957)
- PETRI: L’Assassino (1961)
- ROSSELLINI: Roma Città Aperta (1945)
- BLASETTI: Peccato Che Sia Una Canaglia (1954)
Theater:
- BROOK: Cin Cin (1984)
- MICHALKOV: Pianola Meccanica
- GIOVANNINI: Ciao Rudy
