The Film

One of the most well-known and beloved documentaries, Hoop Dreams is a thrill from start to finish. Originally intended as a 30-minute PBS special, the filmmakers amassed 250 hours of film, which was edited down to nearly three hours.

William Gates and Arthur Agee are two likable teenagers who want to play basketball in the NBA. We meet their families and seemingly witness every moment of their lives — joyful as well as heartbreaking. Three hours fly by watching this captivating documentary.

The Extras

The Booklet

Forty-page booklet featuring essays by cultural historian John Edgar Wideman and Sports Illustrated senior writer Alexander Wolff; Michael Wise’s 2004 Washington Post follow-up article; and a dedication by the filmmakers.

Commentary
  1. With filmmakers Peter Gilbert, James, and Frederick Marx
  2. With stars Agee and Gates
Two delightful commentaries. The filmmakers go into great detail about how the film was put together; the kids — now adults — seem to have a great time talking over images of their teenage lives.
